How is it going for you?
For most of my life, I have done it my way. Apparently, I thought Frank Sinatra got it right. This has led to times of sorrow for me and those near me.
Then, I found the Bible. A book that showed me how futile my efforts were. It showed me why my efforts were futile. Being a skeptic, I did not believe it. So, I decided to try it God's way. What I discovered was transforming. His way is better. My life improved. The lives of those close to me improved because I was no longer negatively affecting them. I guess I had to try it my way before I could be open to trying it God's way.
Now, I try to help others learn the truth of God's word. It is not my word. It is God's word without the filter of my personal thoughts and desires. When I read a verse, I read it over and over again, in context. What is God trying to tell me? When we open ourselves up to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who Jesus promised the Father would send, John 14:26, "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." we learn the meaning of the truth of His word. This happens when we believe that Jesus is our savior, Romans 10:9, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."
I don't know if the Bible is the last honest voice, but I can say it is the only one I have found that is always honest. Each of us has our honest moments. However, we are human. We couch our words in ways that put things in a favorable light, the light we are currently following. The Bible gives us the grimy details, the breadcrumbs leading to the truth. None of the heroes in the Bible were perfect. They are an accumulation of murderers, liars, adulterers, and flawed people whom God has called out of their darkness into the light of His word. Of course, God has called all of us. However, only some of us choose to respond to the light. When we read the Bible, we know it speaks truthfully about what we face daily. We remember when we lied, said a harsh word to a loved one, flirted with someone we shouldn't have, etc. If we open our minds and read the Bible from this perspective, we learn the truth, and it changes our lives.
So, yes, I am tired of doing it my way and making the same mistakes over and over. Every time I have surrendered my way to His way, my life has gotten better. This year, I aim to find more ways to align my life with His will.
My prayer for you is that you will do the same. Try it. What have you got to lose?
Blessings,
bill
