What Does 'Doing It His Way' Mean?

Last week, I told you I was tired of doing it my way. That's easy to say, but what does 'doing it His way' mean?

Doing it His way begins when we finally realize His way is best, Isaiah 55:7-9, "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts." How foolish are we to think we know better than God? He created everything out of nothing, Jeremiah 32:17, "Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:" What have we done that is comparable? Proverbs 14:12, "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death."

Next, we need to understand that everything He does is good; Genesis 1:31, "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day." When He creates, everything is good. However, He does not force His creation to continue in His created good, but rather He allows free will to determine each person's eternal future, Deuteronomy 30:19, "I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:" Why? Because God is love, 1 John 4:8, "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love." and everything He creates is intended to love as He does. But love cannot be forced upon another, or it is no longer love. So, each of us must decide for ourselves. Do we love God or not? If we see He is good and that He loves us, we can choose to love God, 1 John 4:19, "We love him, because he first loved us."

When we love Him and know His way is best, we begin to do things His way. Being imperfect humans, we make mistakes. We stumble, and with His help, we recover from our mistakes; Proverbs 3:6, "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Each time, we grow in our love for Him and His way. Like a child learning to walk.

Fortunately for us, He has left us the Bible and given us the Holy Spirit to guide us through our growth. Our willingness to humble ourselves enough to read the Bible to learn how to live in this fallen world allows us to grow into mature Christians. Again, because we are forgetful human beings, we need to feed on His word daily; Matthew 6:11, "Give us this day our daily bread." We must remember that staying the course is not only for our good but also those whom we are witnessing to, Hebrews 12:1-2, "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."

This is best done in a community. God calls this community His church. It is not a building. It is a gathering of people in love with God who are choosing to be molded into His likeness. A choice freely made out of love. A community working together to bring all home to Jesus by sharpening each other with the truth; Proverbs 27:17, "Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend."

However, none of this is possible without Jesus, John 15:5, "I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing." God knows how stubborn we are. We want to put our labels on everything we touch. Growing in a community will not happen without the humility of Jesus. He came to be a sacrifice for our sinful ways and the door to eternity, John 10:9, "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture." So, doing it God's way begins when we begin to follow Jesus.
